My Sister
That growing up my sister and I were both athletes, but in different ways! I played soccer and softball and she ran track, participated in cheerleading and excelled at Afro-Haitian dance! For the most part, we do not look alike - although we have the same nose! - so people we would meet, teachers and classmates, did not know we were sisters. While there are many differences between us, we both grew up to work in education and have committed our professional lives to service work and improving the educational experience of others. |
My Cousin
That I have a lot of cousins! This cousin has three siblings, one of which is his twin sister! All four played sports, but their favorite sports were different. Soccer, field hockey, water polo, karate. Because my cousin is big and strong, a lot of people think he is tough and unfriendly. But he is sweet and kind and always willing to help a friend! |
My Uncle
That my uncle lost his leg and wore a prosthetic. Because of this, we walks with a limp. A lot of people feel sorry for him when they learn he has a prosthetic and think he spends his days at home. But they are completely wrong! My uncle loved to swim and would take every opportunity to swim in natural water no matter how cold it was! He also loved to go fishing and was with me when I caught my first fish! He was very active and did not feel bad about having a prosthetic leg! |
Sisters
My sister and I are half sisters, although we don't act any different than other sisters. We have the same mother, but different fathers. Her father is African-American and my father is Mexican. At the time this book was written, we had not been to the Grand Canyon. Our mother had been there and this is what she had imagined it would have been like if we had gone with her. Damon, the illustrator, added that image without knowing we would one day travel there. This makes a wonderfully colorful picture and when we did travel there our family was larger and full of even more "colors". |
Lumpias
We were fortunate to live in Albany, CA for 9 years while we were in elementary school. Nearby was Albany Village which was, at the time, married student housing for UC Berkeley. As you can imagine, people came from all over the world to attend UC Berkeley and many brought their families with them. This segment was inspired by a young girl, that I (the narrator) became best friends with, whose family was from the Philippines . |
